I had a really good story to tell you and I can’t remember it. It had to do with being at the Newport Folk Festival last weekend. I was making the signs there. Oh right! It was about signs!
As you know, I make a lot of signs for a lot of festivals. It’s my thing and I’ve done it for nearly 30 years. So not long ago I got a call from the people who were handling the America’s Cup needing a lot of signs for that venerable institution. I was honored, and made lots and lots of my happy little signs on happy yellow coroplast and sent them happily off.
The Americas Cup is hosted at the same spot in Newport as the Folk and Jazz Festivals are and my Folk Festival signs were all over the place this past weekend, telling people what they could and could not do, where to go and when to stop going. Time and time again, locals came up to me and said, “Boy! I wish we’d had your signs at the Americas Cup!” to which I said, “Um, but you did!”
Then, other people said, “We had them the first weekend, but the second weekend we had the angry signs.” The angry signs? “Yes – big signs on white with block letters, obviously printed by a machine with lots of angry words yelling at people.”
Now that was weird.
The guy who called me to make the America’s Cup signs is the same guy who calls me to make the Newport Festivals signs, so I found him and asked what in the world people were talking about with the signs.
He said that the America’s Cup people said that the signs were (and he quoted,) “too festive” and so they had their own made for the second weekend. Angry signs. Now that is a good way to get people to do what you want them to!
A mutual friend just introduced me to the “Minister of Good Vibes” at the Life is Good Festival in September. That might be a better fit . . .
Here’s what we’re having for dinner this week:
Parmesan Crusted Chicken Breast with Fresh Basil Pesto, Local Tomato and Creamed Cauliflower
Vegetarian Eggplant Almond Enchiladas with Chipotle Sauce and Cilantro Rice
Big Crab Cake Salad
with Caper and Red Onion Tartar Sauce over Mixed Greens
LOCAL Burgers, Burgers, Veggie Burgers!
That sounds SO FREAKING GOOD! I’ve been out of town much lately on Friday nights, but this Friday night I’ll be there knocking you guys out of the way so I can eat ALL of that!
Here’s some good news:
Through the summer, Anna plans to deliver bread on Mondays in addition to Thursday through Sunday. So come on in - all types and baguettes!
I don’t have much this week; May, June and July were about the busiest months I’ve ever had in life, so I’m trying to get back into Elmerworld again. Rob is busy with the Ashfield News again, so he’s out. So let’s just call it a day, go see a movie and y’all come in for dinner tomorrow night. Maybe I’ll let you have some.
